Appointment System

Byfield Medical Centre is open Monday, to Friday from 08:00 – 18:30 daily. A full appointment system is operated for consultations within these times, including those specialist services listed on the clinics page.

Appointments are released at 08:00 including those for 3 or 7 days in advance.

Requests for appointments should be made by calling the surgery by telephone on 01327 265841 or online via the link at the top of this page. We have a new phone system that means when you enter the queue after number 11 you will be given instructions on how to be automatically called back rather than hanging on.

We have also opened up appointments two weeks in advance for routine appointments but this does mean a loss of on the day appointments.

The practice closes during the afternoon one Wednesday per month for essential staff training, during this time the phones will be switched to answerphone. Please call 111 during this time for medical advice.

Please note that there is now no Saturday morning surgery provision at Byfield Medical Centre. Patients telephoning the surgery on Saturday mornings will be given clear instructions as to how they can contact the out of hours duty doctor. Please listen carefully to the message.

Chaperones

All clinicians (doctors and nurses) at Byfield Medical Centre will give due consideration to privacy and dignity when examining and treating patients. All consulting rooms have curtains around the examination couches. We direct patients to undress behind the curtains for examination or treatment. Our policy is based on the GMC's guidance - Intimate Examinations, November 1996. We offer a chaperone when examination or treatment involves undressing by the patient to expose:

  • Genitals
  • Breasts in female patients
  • Anal / Perineum area

Also, for some examinations, e.g. Fundoscopy, it will be necessary to darken the room.

Home Visits

Patients who require a home visit by the doctor are requested to telephone the surgery before 10.00am if a visit is required that day. Only requests for an emergency visit will be considered after that time. When making the request, it is important to give the receptionist as much information as possible to enable the doctor to prioritise their visits.

Home visits are reserved for those patients who are unable for medical reasons to attend surgery (lack of transport is not a valid reason for requesting a home visit).

Several patients can be seen in the surgery in the time it takes the doctor to visit one patient at home. Therefore, it is important that patients use this service responsibly.

Text Reminder Service

We have a texting service which allows you to receive confirmation and reminders about your appointments.

To have this service you will need to register by completing a consent form.
